Slated: MUA Magnetic Nail Varnish in Kings Road Circle Effect

As part of my ridiculous MUA haul a while ago, I purchased a magnetic polish in the shade 'Kings Road'. (Apologies for the dark photos of this polish, it didn't photograph well in the light with no flash).

As I have loved the magnetic offerings from Barry M so much, I hoped that MUA would also impress me. I opted for the 'Circle Effect' polish as it's different to the magnetics I already own.

I wasn't impressed. I photographed both hands to show you how random the effect is. I found that even if I held the magnet in the correct position for MINUTES rather than seconds, sometimes it just didn't work. At all. Other times it would work but only a little, and it did work on two or three nails as you can see. But even when it did work I don't really like the effect. It's not big enough to cover as much of the nail as the Barry M ones, which leaves the nails looking a little rubbish and like you've done your nails half-heartedly.

As I'd spent a good half an hour trying to use this product, I'd run out of time to do any other colour on my nails unless I wanted to stay up late to get them done and be knackered at work the next morning. So I quickly painted over the nails with the polish and didn't use the magnet. The polish is a nice silver colour but the consistency is a little strange, very thick and grainy - unlike any other nail varnish I've ever used really. It's so thick that after one day of having this on my nails, you can see that it had already chipped.

So overall very disappointed with this product, both as a magnetic polish and as a regular polish. The colour is nice but unless you're only planning on wearing it for one day, it's just not good enough quality. These retail for £3.50 (from the MUA store or Superdrug), which is only 44p less than the Barry M ones. I'm sure you'll already know that I would recommend you spend the extra 44p and get a decent polish!

Fabulous Nails #20

I've already shown you the blue and red Barry M magnetic nails, and today I'm sharing the silver one! I have to say, this might be my favourite...

I used the silver polish with the horizontal magnet for this look, and I absolutely adore it! I couldn't help sneaking a peak at my gorgeous nails every few minutes whilst I was wearing this - not productive for my working day!

I think metallics are brilliant for winter anyway, but these are just extra special! I can see myself recreating this look for a Christmas party or for New Year's Eve, its just so glam and unique!

Fabulous Nails #18

Today's post is about the red Barry M magnetic nail polish. When I bought these polishes the red was the shade I was instantly drawn to - I am a big fan of red nails in general but the colour in the bottle looks very metallic and perfect for winter wear!

I used the red polish along with the diagonal striped magnet (again as I achieved such a nice effect with the blue) to achieve this look.

I didn't manage to photograph my nails in daylight so excuse the slightly orange hue to the photo! But I think you can see how the colour is nice and glossy and metallic - just as I'd hoped it would be! I love how the magnet bring the lighter tones in the colour to the top to create a contrast against the darker background.

Fabulous Nails #17

Back when I was recovering from my knee surgery, my boyfriend treated me to some Barry M magnetic polishes as a reward for making such good progress with my physio. Since then I've been trying them out, so stay tuned for more Fabulous Nails posts with the different shades! Today though I want to share with you the blue one:

The magnetic polishes all have different shaped magnets that come with them. Because I now own 4 I can mix up the colours and different magnet shapes. I tried the diagonal stripes with the blue polish for this effect. It's very easy to use, you paint one coat of the varnish, leave to dry, and then immediately after painting on the second coat you hold the magnet directly over the nail (I hold it as close as possible without touching) for 10-15 seconds, then voila!

It does take a little extra time to do each nail compared to a normal manicure, but I really think it's worth it. I love this effect - its so classy and ideal for wearing to work this winter. The magnetics come in very classic winter hues; dark red, navy, and metallic black along with some metallic shades too. I'd definitely recommend trying one - the metallic shades especially will be perfect for special events or just spicing up a bland Monday morning!
